Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - It's a first for Moorhead. Bike lanes are coming to parts of the city.
The new bike lanes will be focused around MSUM and Concordia and will link the two schools down seventh avenue, and be a bridge between trails on the east side of town and the river.
Lisa Vatnsdal – Moorhead Neighborhood Services: “As we've been developing subdivisions in the last 15 years we've been very deliberate about including those connections, but the more central area of the community - which is a vibrant area itself - doesn't really have that.”
To further help tie in the bike lanes to the west side of 8th street, Moorhead and MNDOT plan to put up a pedestrian operated stop light on the corner of 8th street and 10th avenue. There has long been concern about the number of people crossing 8th street at the uncontrolled intersection. The new bike routes are just part of the new parking plan that is going in around the 2 schools right now.
Lisa Vatnsdal: “It all helps to reduce the parking congestion in the area, and just makes the area a more vibrant place to be and promotes active living in the community.”
If these routes prove successful than more routes may be looked at in the city. The new lanes will cost about $16,000 and are being paid for with a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield.
