GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A Tokio man has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for abusing a 2-year-old boy on the Spirit Lake Reservation.

Twenty-nine-year-old Allen Demarce Sr. pleaded guilty in June to striking the child with an open hand, resulting in injuries to the boy's face, arms and back. The incident happened in March 2011 on the reservation, where officials have been criticized for alleged lapses in child protection efforts.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says Demarce will be on supervised release for three years following his prison term. He must serve the first six months of that time at a halfway house.
