Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The two violent crimes in Fargo last night come after several more that have occurred in recent weeks.

There have been three armed robberies and at least two serious assaults in the Fargo area in just the past few weeks. Police say crime rate has gone up over the last year, but people shouldn't be too concerned.

The overall rise in crimes in Fargo over the past year follows three years of declining crime rates.

Police say it was bound to go up at some point.

As for for the recent string of armed robberies, it could be due to a "copycat" mentality.

Lt. Joel Vettel, Fargo Police Department: “This is something that often happens. People see one of those armed robberies, they have the illusion that they can do it, too. And often times, they forget that these people get caught.”

Police say Fargo is still one of the safest places in the country, though they do suggest people should always be alert about their personal safety.

An arrest was made within three days of the last armed robbery Fargo police dealt with.
