Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- There was a scare at Hector International Airport Thursday morning as a passenger tried to bring a BB gun onto a plane.

As passengers prepared to board a plane at 6:30 in the morning, TSA screeners found a BB gun designed to look like a pistol in one man's carry-on luggage. Guns are only allowed on planes if they are stored in checked luggage.

The man, who was headed to Guatemala, was detained and questioned by Fargo Police. He is an undocumented immigrant, and is being held by immigration authorities until investigators decide whether to file charges.

Police say the incident shows why screenings are important at every airport.

Lt. Joel Vettel - Fargo Police Department: "It's pretty important when they do those searches here, even if they are, it seems pretty simple, when they're just going to another flight leaving to Minneapolis or Chicago or wherever. Again, their level of activity is probably a little less here, but it's certainly as important."

The FBI has taken over the investigation. The incident did not interrupt or delay any flights this morning.
