Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) -- An equipment failure in the Valley City sewer that restricted water use through the weekend could have been avoided if it had only happened a few months later.

During maintenance work last Thursday morning, a plug blew off of the water main, flooding the pumps and electric motors at the master lift station.

City crews pumped sewage into the Sheyenne River until some of the motors were replaced. City staff had been planning to install new pumps and motors in October.

David Schelkoph - City Administrator: "We can submerse those pumps for up to seven days. So, if we had those pumps installed, none of this would have happened. We would have been able to pump that thing out, and everything would have been just fine. But unfortunately, none of that happened, and so, here we are today."

As of Monday afternoon, two of the three sets of motors are running, and water use can return to normal.
