Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Tomorrow, the North Dakota Department of Health will release the latest statistics on West Nile in the state. It is expected the number of cases will climb to 17 statewide.

It usually takes awhile to diagnose the disease, since many of the symptoms mirror the flu. Symptoms usually appear five to 15 days after the mosquito bite.

This is the time of year where West Nile is most prevalent, because the mosquito is looking for food. A blood test is needed to make the diagnosis.

Treatment is usually only rest and fluids, there is no anti biotic or medicine prescribed other than to manage symptoms.

Stacy Lovelace with the ND Health Dept. says, "best way is to use bug repellant don't go out dusk til dawn and if you do have to go out use bug repellant long sleeve shirt and pants reducing the chance of them getting to you."

Nationwide, there are 700 cases of West Nile this summer.
