Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Esley Thorton came to NDSU three years ago off a state championship and player of the year honors at Bismarck High, hoping to join the long line of great quarterbacks that hailed from North Dakota. Thorton's journey, though, will take him from under center to linebacker.

Craig Bohl made the move official today as Thorton will move from backup quarterback to outside linebacker.

Thorton was passed by redshirt freshman Carson Wentz at backup quarterback. Esley played safety in high school with the Demons, and being a sophomore and wanting to play this was the best road to the field.

Esley Thorton, NDSU Sophomore Linebacker: “I competed to the most of my ability at the quarterback spot, saw that completely through. Carson got the 2 spot. I have some ability to find the field somewhere, third string quarterback is not it, so I knew to help the team benefit myself, make change and talked to coaches and Sam linebacker is the best fit for me.”

Craig Bohl, NDSU 10th year head coach: “What you need to try to do is get best players on field. Esley is way behind in terms of learning but we felt like now is the time. We know where we're at, see what we can sort out with our athletes.”

Bohl also said that redshirt freshman and Brainerd native Joe Haeg will start.
