Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Because of the United Way, thousands of kids in the Red River Valley will have the supplies needed when they start school in just a few short weeks.

4,599 backpacks were prepared and given out for kids in grades Kindergarten through 12th this week.

The Fargodome was the host of the final day of supply pick-up. The line was wrapped around the dome just to get in this afternoon.

The free back-packs also included pencils, three ring binders, folders and notebooks.

Harriette Lacroix - Picked up Backpacks: "Very important; we can't afford to get backpacks and supplies for the kids so it's very nice to have a program like this."

The number of backpacks given away was up more than 100 over last year.
