Detroit Lakes, Minn. (WDAY TV) - Drivers on Highway 59 in Detroit Lakes will soon see a curvy change.

The city is getting its first roundabout. The DOT added this four-way stop on 59 and Willow Street to make the intersection safer. Officials say the roundabout will also help traffic flow.

Traffic gets extremely backed up on summer weekends and events like WeFest. The roundabout was picked over traffic signals for this spot.

Tom Swenson, MN DOT: “Signals if nobody broke the law they'd be very safe. We'd never have a crash but we all know that doesn't happen and when they happen at 55 miles per hour than bad things can happen.”

The project will be finished by summer 2014.
