East Grand Forks, MN (WDAY TV) -- A city goes through a lot of changes in 125 years time as people in East Grand Forks celebrate its anniversary.
Courtney Berthiaume/Former EGF Resident: "It's home. We've been gone almost fifty years but it's still home."
Founded in 1887, 2012 marks the one hundred and twenty fifth year East Grand Forks has been in existence…and those 125 years have brought about a lot of change.
Courtney Berthiaume: "Nothings the same, the people are, but the community, the changing of the Sorlie bridges and the downtown area, it's all different."
In fact, in the early 1930's Ripley 's Believe It Or Not declared a three block area of DeMers Avenue had the highest concentration of neon lights in the world. And although, that may not be true today, downtown has made many efforts to bring the city to life.
Eric Useldinger/EGF Resident: "Downtown has changed a lot. Cabelas and the new boardwalk with all the bars and restaurants it brought a lot of life back to the area."
Carl Whetzel/EGF Resident: "Just the atmosphere you can always walk up and down on the sidewalks and such and enjoy the river. You can sit at the blue moose and enjoy the river, that's really nice."
The flood of 97 brought the most dramatic change to East Grand Forks when the city was devastated and had to rebuild…now 15 years later the city is going strong and still considered a safe place to raise a family and eventually retire.
Eric Useldinger: "Feel like you can sit and have your kids play in the front yard and not be concerned about anything. It's a safe community."
Carole Watt: "We're permanent east-siders."
And while "what was" is gone forever, embracing right now, yet still reflecting on the past is what the East Grand Forks 125th Anniversary Celebration is all about.
People are combining class and family reunions with the festivities.
