Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - We've all seen the effects of the dry conditions on our lawns but what if water was no longer an issue. With a certain style of landscaping, it's possible.
Irrigation, most of us have had to use it this summer to keep our grass having a gorgeous green glow but with Xeriscape landscaping, water wouldn't be an issue.
Allen Lee, Urban Forestry Programs Manager: “When they turn on their irrigation system, that's coming from the water treatment plant, and that's coming straight from the river and we don't always have an unlimited supply of water that we can use.”
This style of landscaping uses plants that are adapted to local climate and soil conditions. Urban Forestry Programs manager Allen Lee says with the dry conditions this year more people may be looking to make a switch.
Lee: “Trying to get away from as much turf, landscape turf, irrigated landscape turf and maybe getting some more native plants, trees, shrubs, perennials that can tolerate our dry conditions as well as our moist conditions a little bit better.”
Xeriscape landscaping isn't only for homeowners. The City of Fargo has already transformed several of its properties over to a Xeriscape style.
The Xeriscape style doesn't have to be boring and drab, it still allows you to have a bold and bright landscape with year round beauty.
Ryan Hoss, Baker Garden and Gift: “Things like little blue stem, big blue stem, switch grass, native flowers, cone flowers, sage and a few other things are all tolerant of dryness.”
Ryan Hoss with Baker Garden and Gift says the Xeriscape style has 80 percent plants or mulch and 20 percent turf.
Hoss: “Probably cut your watering by 50 percent at least or more, with choosing the right plants and reducing the green space.”
The drought friendly style still requires some maintenance but the yard work may be worth the savings in your pocket and the savings for Mother Nature
