West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- There are 216 workers at the DMI plant in West Fargo that have uncertain futures tonight. DMI Industries is being sold, and with a reduced demand for wind turbines its future is cloudy.

Otter Tail Corporation entered a nonbinding letter of intent to sell the wind tower manufacturing plant, and it's unclear whether the new owners will continue with the current workforce. The announcement was made at a company meeting last night.

Otter Tail Corporation is still in negotiations, and is not releasing the name of the potential buyer. If the deal is not finalized by January 3rd, they plan to close the company.

Jim Diederick has worked at DMI for 14 years, and says the uncertainty is scary.

Jim Diederick – DMI Employee: "They've been a good company to work for, DMI and OtterTail. We appreciate what they've done for us, but like I said, it's an unknown and we don't know what's gonna happen."

A representative for OtterTail Corporation says lack of a predictable national energy policy and low natural gas prices contributed to a dramatic decline in demand for wind towers.

Otter Tail Corporation intends to sell DMI's property, plant, and equipment, in both West Fargo and Tulsa, Oklahoma, for $20 million.
