FARGO, N.D. (WDAY TV) - There's a graphic new PSA video that's going viral. Its message? How to survive a mass shooting.
In the wake of the Colorado movie theatre massacre and a gunman opening fire in a temple in Wisconsin over the weekend, officials say people need to start thinking about what they'd do in the situation.
Creators of this video want to drill a new mantra into your head. We had stop, drop and roll when we were younger. Now it's run, hide, fight.
If chaos strikes they want this saying to over-ride the panicked thoughts in your head.
The graphic nature of this video is the first thing that jumps out, characterizing a killer shooting everyone in sight at the workplace.
A similar shock-tactic was recently used by Fargo police in this PSA to deter people from texting and driving.
Chief Keith Ternes, Fargo Police: "For us to get a public safety message across at times we do have to capture a person’s attention and the way you do that in some instances is by being somewhat graphic."
The city of Houston put this video together more than a month ago. It wasn't until the Colorado shooting that the Mayor signed-off on making public.
Overseas PSA videos are released to teach people what to do if a suspicious package or bag appears U.S. Officials say this is our equivalent and it's time to prepare.
Chief Ternes: "As unfortunate as that is, it is something in today’s day and age we do need to be prepared for."
The last part of the run, hide, fight tactic is raising questions. Do you really want to take on someone with a gun?
"As a last resort, if your life is at risk, whether you are alone or working together as a group, fight back with aggression, improvise weapons, disarm him and commit to taking the shooter down, no matter what."
That last part takes a lot of people back to United Flight 93 during the 9-11 attacks.
Those people had nowhere to run or hide. They huddled, famously said "let's roll," and fought back. They lost their lives but think of how many more they likely saved.
