FARGO, N.D. (WDAY TV) - Congress is now in recess, leaving many bills in limbo including the Farm Bill.

North Dakota congressman Rick Berg and South Dakota congresswoman Kristi Noem met with ag leaders at NDSU to talk about the bill. Berg says they hope to gain insights from local farmers and ranchers who want long-term stability.

The Senate passed a farm bill in June, but the House recessed before passing its version.

Rick Berg - (R) U.S. Senate Candidate: “Agriculture is the backbone of our state. We need that certainty in agriculture, I mean, there's no question. That's why we're fighting so hard for a long-term five-year program, to ensure that whether it's people providing financing or supplies to our farmers, know that we have a long-term plan in place.”

Heidi Heitkamp - (D) U.S. Senate Candidate: “It is critically important for the drought-impacted areas to get something passed. And I think that the House bill that was passed is a sorry substitute for a farm bill that actually addresses the issues in their entirety.”

The current farm bill expires September 30th.
