Claim: 20K signatures for North Dakota anti-tobacco campaign

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Backers of a complete smoking ban in bars and other North Dakota workplaces say they have enough petition signatures to put the issue to a vote.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Backers of a complete smoking ban in bars and other North Dakota workplaces say they have enough petition signatures to put the issue to a vote.

The anti-smoking initiative is one of six measures that could be on the November ballot this fall. If it qualifies, it will be listed as Measure 3.

Supporters of the smoking ban turned in more than 21,000 signatures to Secretary of State Al Jaeger's office Thursday. They need only about 13,500 names to get on the ballot.

West Fargo respiratory therapist Chelsey Matter is the campaign's chairwoman. She says volunteers gathered names in every county, and there appears to be widespread support for the workplace smoking ban.

North Dakota already prohibits smoking in most enclosed public places, but the proposed new law is tougher.
