LAKE PARK, Minn. (WDAY TV) - You know the emotions of moving into a new house. The long wait is over. The work of boxing up things, all worth it.

Imagine in Lake Park-Audubon, where students, parents and teachers have watched a brand new building go up, after decades of strife and disappointment.

Days away from the first day of school, high school teacher Laureen Svobodny is already back in her classroom.

Not just any classroom, after 30 years as a teacher, Laureen is moving and unpacking hundreds of books in her brand spanking new Lake Park-Audubon High School.

Laureen Svobodny, Lake Park Audubon Teacher: "Over a 30 year career, you accumulate a lot of stuff."

After so many referendum attempts, failures, that resulted in hard feelings and an emotional roller coaster for the community, many look at the $17 million school as a healing tool.

Svobodny: “We have waited for a long time for this I think it will be like the first day of school. I think the first day of school will be a monumental event for us in this community.”

Dickens, Shakespeare, all the good ones made the trip over to the new school. In days, hundreds of students whose parents and grandparents have waited for new brick and mortar.

Svobodny: "So excited to move forward and look ahead to things we will be able to do that we haven't before."

That we will, we will at last walk into something that will bridge two towns for years.

Families of students are invited to a special walk through of the new high school August 29th. School starts September 4th.
