FARGO, N.D. (WDAY TV) - The new Sanford Fargo Medical Center is the largest private construction project in the Dakotas.
Thousands of Sanford employees turned out to celebrate the groundbreaking for the project.
The most impressive number is the price tag: nearly half a billion dollars. $541 million to be exact.
The 10 story center will house 460 hospital beds, 51 emergency department bays and 32 operating rooms.
It'll take a crew of 600 construction workers to complete the 1.3 million square foot center.
That's equal to 22 1/2 football fields.
It'll be made up of 2.2 million bricks and 1,333 windows and don't worry about a bathroom shortage. There will be 737 of those.
The medical center will serve 4,200 patients every day.
T. Denny Sanford, Philanthropist: “They made some promises. They far exceed everything they have ever done and we're going to keep providing the best health care of anyone in this state right here at Sanford health and a lot of it right at this new location.”
When the new medical center is finished in 2016, the downtown campus will remain open. It will be remodeled and the Roger Maris Cancer Center will be expanded.
