FARGO, N.D.D (WDAY TV) - People often expect to get sick in the winter months but your air conditioner could give you a summer cold.
Air conditioning units circulate air, including any colds and viruses floating around.
They can also get moldy if not properly maintained.
One way to prevent illness is to replace the filter, or at least have it inspected, each year.
Joel Carlson, Laney’s HVAC Install Manager: “UV lights. Anything, any organisms that pass by, the UV light would kill them. And then you need a good filter after that to capture anything that's going to be floating around.”
You can also check the filter yourself.
Carlson: “You can take your filters out when the furnace isn't running or the air conditioning isn't running. You can pull it out and look at it. If it's black, it's obviously really, really dirty. If it's still the original color, you're probably OK. And you kind of have to judge it on your own accord.”
