Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The American Red Cross says the national blood supply is at its lowest in fifteen years.

Donations are typically slow in the summer, but this year is worse than most.

Severe weather also played a role, as many blood drives were cancelled due to summer storms.

United Blood Services in Fargo is able to fulfill their obligation to local hospitals, but Recruitment Director Jennifer Bredahl says donations have slowed down.

Jennifer Bredahl with the United Blood Services says, "summer is definitely a tighter time for us. We don't have the high schools and the colleges. They are great donors for us and they help us with our donation base. But right now, we really do struggle when it becomes the end of July, beginning of August, when people are trying to get those last-minute vacations in."
