Local equipment makes Olympic waves in London

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- We've seen the epic races, the heart-pounding finishes and the tearful medal ceremonies. But did you know some of the training equipment that keeps those athletes performing at their highest level is developed right across the river in Moorhead?

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- We've seen the epic races, the heart-pounding finishes and the tearful medal ceremonies. But did you know some of the training equipment that keeps those athletes performing at their highest level is developed right across the river in Moorhead?

This is the same bench system that Cormax sent to London to help train Olympic Athletes, but as you can see, it's not your typical barbell and bench.

Dave Karlstrom - President/CEO Cormax: "Instead of a bar going across, you can see with our handles nothing can every come down on you. Anybody can now be extremely powerful, move the weight as fast as possible with a maximum amount of weight."

Dave Karlstrom, President and CEO of Cormax, developed the technology nearly a decade ago. The key is a patented hydraulic system.

Dave Karlstrom: "It just catches the weight when it falls. That means, whatever I'm doing, whether it's a snap clean, a jump squat or a bench I can build inertia, throw it, and control the rate of fall."

Karlstrom says he received a call from a premier athletic training facility in London earlier this summer. The performance center will be home to many Olympic athletes and wanted his benching station across the pond as quickly as possible.

Dave Karlstrom: "It's fun to be working with that level of athlete, and believe me, summer Olympics track and field, I'm glued to the TV. I just love watching that, and to think that these people will be training on it, it's really exciting."

Since 2003, this Moorhead company's equipment has been in the training facilities of teams like the Indianapolis Colts, the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and now it’s in London - powering the elite to Olympic Gold.

Cormax Equipment is also used in several high schools throughout North Dakota and Minnesota.
