Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Emergency Responders and Xcel energy officials are making sure they are always on high alert in the case of a natural gas leak.

The call went out like an actual emergency shortly after 9 this morning. When responders showed up on scene at this south Fargo construction site, they treated everything like a full scale leak.

The first thing is to make sure all homeowners are evacuated, then responders test concentration levels. Natural Gas is laced with a distinct odor. Any sort of spark could ignite it.

Mark Nisbet - Xcel North Dakota Principal Manager: "We take any call very seriously and pride ourselves on the partnership we have with the first responders. The fire department does a great job."

Once a home is ventilated and natural gas reaches outside, the substance disperses quickly.
