Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) -- The Valley City School Board is taking steps to see that students in the district eat better. Students will learn more about healthy fruits and vegetables, and will get snacks each day to talk about.
Parents and students will have to change the treats they bring to school and sell for fundraisers. Only healthy foods will be allowed--no pizza or candy. The policy will will be evaluated over the next three years and then become mandatory.
Sue Milender - Food Services Director: "We actually implemented an evaluation tool into the policy. Most policies in a school are the policy itself, 5 or 6 pages. Ours is lengthy because we took the evaluation tool and put it right into the policy, so the evaluation tool will look at the standard. Say, 'Are we meeting it? How are we meeting it? and Who is responsible?'"
There will be another hearing to finalize the policy on Monday.
