South Moorhead farmer has a hard time finding hay

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- A South Moorhead hobby farmer says he's cutting it close. He'll need hay soon to feed the goats, but he can't seem to find anyone selling. His suppliers say dry weather is hurting their supply.

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- A South Moorhead hobby farmer says he's cutting it close. He'll need hay soon to feed the goats, but he can't seem to find anyone selling. His suppliers say dry weather is hurting their supply.

It's crunch time. The Lambersons, hobby farmers just south of Moorhead, says they need hay. And quick. There's only so much grass to go around.

Allen Lamberson - Raises Goats: "They've eaten it. As as you can see it isn't growing back very fast so we have to put them in different pastures."

Allen Lamberson's been looking for weeks to pick up a couple hundred hay bales. He says hay suppliers are simply out - dry weather is causing a shortage.

Allen Lamberson: "Hoping, waiting for it to start raining."

Lamberson says if he has to travel to get hay, he has to pass that cost along to customers. That means more expensive goat milk, cheese, soap, and even the cost of the goats themselves will be more expensive.

Allen Lamberson: "The cost will go somewhere. We have to get it, and we have to spend diesel to go down and get it or have it shipped in."

Farmers say it all depends on where you are in the Valley. Craig Olson cuts his own hay -- and says he's good to go for winter.

Craig Olson - Harvests Hay: "Average to a little below. I don't think we're hurting at all."

Yet Olson says it is like mowing your lawn.

Craig Olson: "The more rain you have the more quantity of hay you get. Too much rain is not no good either."

Back at the hobby farm, Lamberson has only a few weeks worth of hay left.

Then, he'll have to stop holding out and buy bales elsewhere.

Lamberson doesn't expect the cost of hay to rise, he just says it'll cost him more to get it.
