Cavalier, ND (WDAY TV) -- Construction on the dam at Icelandic State Park near Cavalier, North Dakota is on pace to start up again this fall.

One part of the project is finished, where crews replaced the dam with a clay structure. Campers are detoured while a concrete road is being built along the structure.

The dam makes it safer for those down stream on the Tongue River. It also allows the lake-level to be a foot higher.

Justin Robinson - Park Manager: "With raising that one foot, that kind of counters part of the siltation that has occurred over the last 50 years. It allows for better boating opportunities. Better recreational opportunities."

A concrete emergency spillway will also be built. The project is expected to be done in 2014.
