WORTHINGTON, Minn. (AP) — A Twitter account set up to spread gossip about Worthington High School students was swiftly shut down after school officials complained to police, and a top administrator said he may pursue discipline against any students involved in setting it up.

The page was set up on Twitter's public forum as WHSTrojanGossip, the Worthington Daily Globe reported.

Authorities said it included sexually explicit, derogatory and false statements about high school students. Worthington District 518 Administrator John Landgaard worked with Worthington police to get Twitter to suspend the account.

Landgaard said the students involved could face charges related to harassment, terroristic threats and slander.

"That's the part these kids don't understand," he said. "If they make these statements, true or not, some people believe they're true. Consequently they not only put themselves in a potential lawsuit or legal action, but they also put their parents in that."

Landgaard said he has a half-page of names of high school students and graduates who may have played a role in the forum. He says there are parents who should "wake up" and start checking on what their kids are doing.
