Another death highlights Spirit Lake problems

FORT TOTTEN, N.D. (AP) — The chairman of the Spirit Lake Sioux says the tribe is investigating the death of a 2 month-old girl whose mother was suspected of drug abuse and child neglect.

FORT TOTTEN, N.D. (AP) — The chairman of the Spirit Lake Sioux says the tribe is investigating the death of a 2 month-old girl whose mother was suspected of drug abuse and child neglect.

But Roger Yankton also says the tribe is being unfairly singled out for alleged failures in protecting reservation children

The regional administrator for the U.S. Administration for Children and Families last month called for suspending all state and federal funding to the tribe until it put qualified officials in place to protect endangered children. A Bureau of Indian Affairs review earlier this year detailed problems in tribal social services programs.

Yankton has cited staff turnover, high caseloads and inadequate federal funding for problems.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon tells Forum Communications that federal authorities are looking into the death of the 2 month-old.
