Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) -- It's the Valley City Police Chiefs first week on the job and already a busy one.

Fred Thompson's first case was the disappearance of Amber Glatt.

He has been in law enforcement for more than 30-years, serving in both New Jersey and Nevada.

After earning the title of Captain at his last post in Henderson, Nevada, Thompson retired after the force decided to downsize. He says he didn't feel like he was ready to retire and Valley City seemed like the perfect fit.

Thompson says, "I like the small town feel and it doesn't have the hustle and bustle and activity that Henderson had."

Thompson replaces Dean Ross who left amid political turmoil.
