North Dakota crashes spark discussion of drunken driving

ARGO, N.D. (AP) — The head of the North Dakota State's Attorneys Association says it's time people in North Dakota figure out a way to address drunken driving.

Aaron Birst's comments to The Forum come in the wake of two deadly crashes in which authorities say alcohol was involved. One killed a man, his pregnant wife and their toddler daughter, and the other involved the deaths of two boys hit by a truck while inside a tent at a campground.

There were 6,600 DUI arrests in North Dakota last year. State senator and former sheriff Stan Lyson says the problem isn't related to law enforcement or state law but to the public's attitude about alcohol. Highway Patrol Lt. Jody Skogen says society needs to send the message that drunken driving isn't acceptable.
