St. Paul, MN (WDAY TV) - Rural Minnesota is expected to have a big impact on the same-sex marriage debate. A proposed constitutional amendment would ban same-sex marriage. Activists on both sides are focusing on voters outside the Twin Cities, using their resources across the state.
Minnesotans United for All Families, the group opposing the amendment, has sent staffers to Duluth, Rochester and soon Mankato. Supporters are reaching out to rural areas, and say they've identified 65,000 supporters.
Dr. Robert Wood – UND Political Science Professor: “There are not a lot of same sex couples who live in rural area, their concentration is going to be a lot higher in urban areas so those people are going have friend and they are going to understand the personal impact.”
In many past elections, voters in more diverse youthful urban areas opposed such bans.
