"Magic Mike" is projected to be a summer blockbuster. Advertisers took a page out of their own book, except this time exploiting men instead of women. And the females are buying it.
Throughout the 5 Magic Mike showings today women have been filing in, with their pre-bought tickets in hand. I think the best word to describe all of them would be giddy.
Andrea Grossnickle: "so excited I can't hardly wait//because it's about time us girls get a chick flick we can really drool over."
Kate Swenson: "I saw the trailer the first time, I'm thrilled that it's finally here."
Now fellas can you really blame them, the movie trailers have been all over TV....45 seconds of this.
A look back at these types of movies, you could argue it's the woman's turn...
Men had Demi Moore in Striptease, then came Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls.
And before even seeing the film, women had their pick for this one.
The interesting part about its advertising, this movie is out on the heels of the 50 shades of Gray Phenomenon. So are we seeing a changing of the guard from women to men now being objectified.
Ann Burnett/Director of Women's & Genders Studies: "kind of a hot summer you might say.."
Director of Women's Studies at NDSU, Dr. Ann Burnett says feminist will either see this as, about time women get their eye candy... Others argue why exploit either sex, and believe this new trend is just a fad.
Ann: "i don't predict that it's going to continue. The objectification of women has been longstanding it's in movies, tv, advertisements, this is a sort of make-fun of spoof of that kind of thing.."
The future holds that answer, as for now women we talked to say this trailer is a little misleading to what the movie is actually about, there's more of a storyline than just stripping.
Andrea: "kinda wish there was a little more for this demographic anyway."
The shows at 7 & 9 tonight, sold out hours before airing. Someone inside unofficially kept track and said the female to male ratio was about 10 to 1.
