(WDAY TV) -- Travis Saurer is a 13 year dirt track veteran.

The Elizabeth, Minnesota native races both the Mid-West Modifieds and the A-Modifieds four days a week and travels a round trip of 356 miles every weekend just to race starting in Ada on Thursday nights wrapping up in Glyndon on Sundays.

Saurer is the defending national champion in the Mid-West Mod division, a title he has won twice. But the man that has become a crowd favorite with 296 career feature wins had a interesting start.

Saurer says, "through high school and a little out of high school through college I was in rodeo and I rode bulls and bareback I got in a few bad wrecks and my dad pretty much told me he'd help me get in my first car going if I quite rodeo and start racing. It's a full time Monday through Friday deal, whenever you have a day off you are always scaling cars and fixing on stuff and getting ready for the week."
