LOS ANGELES — British soul singer Adele, whose multiple Grammy Award-winning album “21” made her a worldwide star in 2011, has announced she is expecting her first child, with boyfriend Simon Konecki. Adele, 24, broke the news on her website Friday.
“I’m delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together,” she wrote. “I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we’re over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time.”
Adele has never hidden the fact that she wanted children, nor that she was in any hurry to follow up “21,” which has sold more than 9 million records in the United States and has been in the top 10 for 70 consecutive weeks (it’s at No. 7 this week), spending 24 of those in the No. 1 slot.
In February, Adele told Vogue magazine the she was taking a much-needed break after touring for much of the previous year — a tour that ended abruptly after she was sidelined with vocal issues that required surgery. “I am … off for four or five years. If I am constantly working, my relationships fail. So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy.”
The singer quickly backpedaled on that threat, though, writing on her blog soon thereafter that her time frame had already changed. “I’ve a few days off now, and then it’s the Brit Awards here at home and then I’m straight into the studio. BOYYAHH! 5 years? More like 5 days!”
The singer hasn’t announced a due date — or a release date — for any of her upcoming creations.
