Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - A Moorhead man is in jail tonight accused of stealing a vehicle. Margarito Gomez Serena Jr. was pulled over after passing a West Fargo Police car. That car was equipped with an Automated License Plate Reader.

The reader scans license plates. If one has been reported stolen it sends an alarm to the officer. The officer is responsible for checking the scanned image to see if it matches the actual license plate.

The vehicle was reported stolen from a rental agency in the Minneapolis airport in May. Serena was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and driving under revocation. Officers say the system is like having a second set of eyes.

Eric Wiinanen – West Fargo Police: "You can't catch every plate, you can't run every plate, you can't see every plate, but having a piece of equipment like this that actually does that for you automatically in the background. It is a nice little additional piece of equipment for us."

This was the first arrest in the metro thanks to the Automated License Plate Reader.
