OAKPORT TOWNSHIP, Minn. - A coffeemaker is believed to have caused a fire that destroyed a house, attached garage and trailer in Oakport Township north of Moorhead.

The fire was reported this morning at 6:02 at a rural farmstead at 6701 Broadway St. N.W. owned by Robert and Lynn Maier. They were home at the time along with their daughter, Jamie Maier.

Robert Maier, 67, woke up this morning and started coffee in a coffee maker on the stove, authorities said. He then went outside to check on a horse. A short while later, Jamie Maier, 35, smelled smoke. She woke up her mother, Lynn Maier, 66, and both got out of the house safely. There were no injuries.

The two-story house, a one-story attached garage on the north side of the house and a trailer on the south side all were totaled, said Dilworth Fire Chief Kurt Kennedy. Kennedy said firefighters are still trying to put out the fire to see if there is anything to salvage.

Responding to the fire were the Dilworth Area Fire Department, the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
