NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) — Crew members of the USS Arikara during the Vietnam War visited the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in northwest North Dakota this week to meet members of the tribe for which their ship was named.

Steve Ussery of Wilmington, N.C., tells the Minot Daily News that crew members knew their tug was named for an American Indian tribe, but that was all the information they had at the time.

The Arikara, Mandan and Hidatsa make up the Three Affiliated Tribes at Fort Berthold.

Ussery visited the reservation after a 2009 military reunion in Detroit. That started the plans for a USS Arikara reunion in North Dakota, with the help of Three Tribes Museum Administrator Marilyn Hudson.
