Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) -- It's an itchy situation in Detroit Lakes, officials say swimmers itch is back.

Plans are in place to keep issue from becoming a problem. Sometime after June 18th PLM Lake and Land Management Corporation will be treating the lakes with copper sulfate.

Swimmers Itch is caused by the larval form of specific species of flatworm parasites. The parasite bites and burrows into the skin, but dies shortly after due to the lack of oxygen.

Copper Sulfate kills off all parasites connected to swimmers itch.

Tim Gordon, Becker County Sherriff, says, "we don't do beach closures etc, unless it was horrific, but for the most part it is not a life endangering issue."

Gordon says it is important to always shower with hot water and soap after swimming in any lake.
