Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- It's a widely known fact that childhood obesity can lead to health problems later in life. But a new study shows obesity is associated with poor academic performance starting as early as grade school.

Researchers say being active can go as far as improving math skills. But some wonder if it's obesity as a "variable" that makes a difference or whether it's the *factors* that lead to obesity.

Jim Whitehead, UND Phys. Ed and Exercise Science Prof., says, "I think they'll all agree that kids need more activity and it will help them in a variety of ways, both improving learning, reducing obesity and in general helping them be happier more productive people."

Darryl Marek, YMCA Sports Director, says, "A lot of parents come in looking for different types of activities, different experiences for the kids."

Studies have also shown physical habits begin very early in life.
