Reactions to the Fighting Sioux Nickname retirement

Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- So, for the 2nd time, UND will begin to retire the 80 year old nickname and logo.

Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- So, for the 2nd time, UND will begin to retire the 80-year old nickname and logo.

There are no retirement ceremonies planned. The emphasis will be on moving forward, with, eventually, a new nickname and logo.

Robert Kelley, UND President, says, "the law that was repealed had specificity that we not have a new name or logo until 2015, so the sense of a timeline of getting to that point, we have about 2-years to finish that up."

At one time, Kelley estimated the cost of retiring the nickname at about 750-thousand dollars.
