Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The defeat of Dave Piepkorn and the victory of Sobolik made for election night drama.

Once the results came in, it was hugs all around as a jubilant Melissa Sobolik talking to late night supporters.

Sobolik: "We are going to have a wonderful, fresh perspective on our city commission and I look forward to the opportunity to working with each and everyone of you."

It was who came to her victory party that made the night so intriguing. More than half the city commission, including the mayor was there supporting and celebrating her win.

Mayor Dennis Walaker: "And I had recommendations from department heads they were impressed and she did her homework. It was exciting last night to see her enthusiasm."

And so was it this...

Dave Piepkorn - Former Fargo City Commissioner: "If you worked for me, you wouldn't work for me."

Or this, the push to change pension for city workers, including police and fire, that hurt a vocal, but determined Piepkorn come election night.

Melissa Sobolik: "I cannot thank the firefighters and the police enough for their endorsement."

Dave Piepkorn - Fargo City Commissioner: "The stuff I voted on, I did my homework and I stand behind it. That's is how I operate. There is a multitude of reasons, but that's how it is. The voters are always right so that's how it goes. We'll wait and see, but I will say it was a great experience and I learned a lot."

Sobolik was the top vote getter in the race, now becoming the only woman on the commission.

Sobolik starts on the commission in two weeks.
