Olmsted Co. settles lawsuit over jail death

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Olmsted County will pay $900,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a man who committed suicide in jail.

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Olmsted County will pay $900,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a man who committed suicide in jail.

The family of 36-year-old Kyle Raymond sued the county alleging its cell checks at the jail were too infrequent. The lawsuit says Raymond had not been checked for more than four hours before he was found dead in his cell in 2007, despite concerns about intoxication and depression when he arrived at the jail.

The Post-Bulletin says Sheriff David Mueller says the jail has streamlined deputies' duties to make sure it adheres to state standards of performing a well-being check every half-hour.

The settlement is to be paid from the county's self-insurance fund.
