Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Back in 2008, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks signed a pair of middle-infielders, and like any independent club, they were just hoping for at least a year of solid production. Five years later, those two players are still here and their relationship is strong evidence.
Carlo Cota and Zach Penprase have been turning double plays together at Newman Outdoor Field for the last 5 summers.
Zach Penprase – FM Redhawks Shortstop: “We’re just always on the same page. It works out well and gives Doug a good middle infield to take care of those ground balls.”
Carlo Cota – FM Redhawks 2nd Baseman: “Zach’s a great shortstop and we’re always on the same page. Sometimes we don’t even have to talk or anything and we know exactly what each other are thinking.”
While the two struck a friendship on the field, they've grown a stronger bond off it. After the 2011 season, the tandem traded in their gloves for paddles taking on the boundary waters in Northern Minnesota.
Zach Penprase: “We borrowed a canoe from our clubby, Bambino. We had a great time and, like I said, we’re such good friends that there’s really nothing that could bother us. We spent five days out in the wilderness together and I don’t think we got mad at each other once.”
That trip to the wilderness hasn't worn off completely, which is evidenced by Zach's interesting new look this season.
Zach Penprase: “I’ve been growing it since last June, so I’ve been growing it for a year. I just want to try something different. I feel like I’m thinning out a little on top, so I just grow it as long as I can while I have it. I’ve got Johnny Damon. I’ve got Jesus was the first one. Then when we were in El Paso I got Joe Dirt, Tom Selleck, Fabio was one of them.”
Carlo Cota: “He’s the most recognizable person in Fargo right now. If you’ve ever been to a Redhawks game and then see Zach in the street you know that that’s Zach Penprase.”
The pair will likely go down as the most recognizable double-play combination in Redhawks history.
Zach Penprase: “It’s just a friendship on the field, it’s not like teammates.”
Carlo Cota: “We just have fun out there and that’s the best part about it.”
The Hawks will try to snap a 4 game losing streak tonight in St. Paul.
