Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A former presidential candidate came to Fargo with a mission to send a message of strong support for the North Dakota Air National Guard base.

Arizona Senator John McCain toured the base with state leaders. The republican legislator is learning about the Air Guard's Predator and C-21 missions and the transition to the C-27-J mission.

The C-27-J fleet is fully paid for, but the transition is seeing resistance because of previous proposals to cut the fleet. McCain stressed just how important the National Guard is to our nation.

John McCain - (R) Arizona: "Without the guard, the mission of our military in Iraq and Afghanistan would not be possible. And the support here in North Dakota is phenomenal.”

The base is in line to get four C-27-Js, but first needs approval by the US Senate Armed Services Committee.
