Fighting Sioux nickname supporters schedule rally

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A group in favor of keeping the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname is planning a two-day rally in Fargo.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A group in favor of keeping the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname is planning a two-day rally in Fargo.

It's called the "Save The Sioux Truth Tour." Spokesman Sean Johnson says the event will promote a "no" vote on a ballot measure that would retire the nickname.

Johnson says the group will have petitions for a second ballot measure that would change the North Dakota Constitution to make Fighting Sioux a permanent moniker.

Johnson's group organized the first petition drive after lawmakers repealed a bill that enshrined the nickname into law.

Supporters of retiring the moniker say the controversy is hurting the athletic program.

The rally is set for Thursday morning near West Acres Mall. It's scheduled Thursday afternoon and all day Friday at Ribfest near the Fargodome.
