Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Some of UND's most influential coaches are on a state tour, pleading with people to vote Yes and retire the Fighting Sioux Nickname. The coaches say there are a lot of negative impacts from NCAA sanctions.
Coaches say they've already lost too many competitive opportunities with top regional schools like Minnesota. The NCAA won't let them compete.
Coaches say it'll affect their programs, current athletes, and recruits. Coaches also say there's a chance they won't be able to stay part of the Big Sky Conference, and remain a Division 1 team.
Dave Hakstol – UND Hockey Coach: "The only pathway to continue forward with the name and logo would be under NCAA sanction. That made this decision, and this process, and this choice very clear."
All eligible North Dakota voters will decide the fate of the nickname on June 12th.
