Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - John Deere Electronics Solutions employees are packing backpacks, preparing to send them off to students who are hungry. Each week, 20 to 25 employees will pack 500 backpacks full of food for 12 weeks total.
It's part of a new summer program with the United Way and Great Plains Food Bank. During the school year, students get access to bags like this to take home over the weekend.
Students in the summer usually don't have access to that food. By the end of the summer, 6,000 backpacks will be delivered to children in need.
Melissa Sobolik – Great Plains Food Bank: "We started looking at what's the best way to reach those students. How can we reach them if they aren't coming to summer school, if they are not enrolled in an after-school activity of some sort."
In addition, John Deere employees are donating money and food.
