Vlley City, ND (WDAY TV) - A funnel was spotted and captured on video near Valley City. There wasn't even a rain showers near this funnel.
You can see the funnel extending from the cloud to the ground in the video shot by Julie Neidlinger of Bismarck. Neidlinger was heading west on I-94 around 7:15 Sunday evening, back to Bismarck from Fargo. She thought it was just smoke from a distance, but clearly it's a funnel going all the way to the ground. That makes it a tornado.
When we're looking for the classic tornado, we're looking for something that's coming out of a rotating super cell storm. This is just kind of coming out of a regular cloud. So this is a landspout and not the classic tornado.
Daryl Ritchison – StormTRACKER Meteorologist: “Land spouts tend to be weaker forms, like big giant dust devils, but they are associated with a cloud on it. Usually they form in the open. You can keep an eye on it. There's always the better safe than sorry, but if you happen to see them on the road and you’re in the open generally just drive away.”
These are more land spouts from Texas earlier this month where there were multiple vortices. The National Weather Service officially identifies these as dust tube tornadoes, just one of the many weather phenomenon you can find if you keep an eye to the sky.
