Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - He was Moorhead's mayor for 22 years. Most recently he drafted the bill that will build a billion dollar stadium and kept the Vikings in Minnesota. After four decades of perpetual campaigning Morrie Lanning is hanging it up.

Surrounded by his family, including numerous grandchildren appropriately decked out in the purple and gold, Morrie Lanning told those closest to him, his time was up.

Morrie Lanning – Announcing Retirement: “There's much more to enjoy in life beyond one's public service.”

It's a career that started in 1973 when he was elected to represent Moorhead's third ward on the city council. Six years later he took over as mayor.

Mark Voxland – Moorhead Mayor: “He's a good person to work with and deal with it, when he says he's going to do something, he just does it.”

Lanning would serve as mayor for 22 years, until he took over as a state representative in 2002. Re-elected five-times, he says it was never easy.

Morrie Lanning: “Patience and perseverance and treating people with respect makes all the world in getting things done.”

But is this the end all - be all for the career politician?

Morrie Lanning: “Be assured that you have not seen the last of Morrie Lanning.”

Maybe there's something to be said about going out on top.

Lanning said he could endorse a replacement candidate as soon as tomorrow.
