Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Summer heat and summer rain mean those summer bugs are right around the corner. We've seen the insect repellant, the torches and the candles, but maybe all you need is your smartphone.
Right now, it's still a little chilly for those pesky pests, but we've all been there - hanging out at the park, slapping every limb on our body trying to get rid of those menacing mosquitoes. Not all of us carry repellant every moment of the summer, but most of us always have our cell phone. It's an old fashioned technology taking on Mother Nature.
It's called the Mosquito Repellant Smartphone Application. It's one screen - as simple as on and off - and works like this: Five buttons at the bottom of the screen submit different frequencies. The first is a very high annoying tone, the second a dull pulsating tone. The last three are silent to the human ear.
Ben Prather – Cass County Vector Control: “There's really no scientific proof that sound will fight off a mosquito or anything like that.”
The theory is that the sound mimics that of a mosquito's predator, but it's just that...a theory.
Ben Prather: “Go for the Deet, go for the FDA approved stuff that you're going to spray on and repel ticks and mosquitoes.”
Next time those biting bugs are everywhere, maybe give it a try. After all it's free.
If you don't have an Android, there are similar smart-phone applications for the iPhone. A quick word of advice, the silent sounds we can't hear, can be torture to our cats and dogs, so be careful if you have pets.
