Rain can't stop special ceremony to honor the fallen

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- Each Memorial Day there's a special ceremony on the Veteran's Memorial Bridge between Fargo and Moorhead to honor fallen soldiers. People wave flags and participate in celebration, only this year one thing did not cooperate, Mother Nature.

The rain didn't stop falling as ceremonies on the bridge were supposed to begin. As people stood under their umbrellas, realizing the rain wasn't going to stop falling, celebrations were moved indoors to the civic center.

Terry Richardson/U.S. Navy Veteran: "Veterans are Veterans, they are going to do it no matter what, it doesn't matter."

U.S Navy Veteran Terry Richardson is in charge of all the Patriotic Bodies in our area. After seeing the weather didn't care if it was a holiday or not, he made sure the services were just as they would be outside.

Terry: "The auxiliaries and the Veterans will be placing wreaths up in the front, just as they would if we were out at Riverside."

The band still played, people who have served and who are serving are recognized, and the traditional gun salute outside was heard by all inside.

Terry: "I am proud of what our Veterans have done and this day is a memorial for all of our fallen Veterans, that's what it's all about."

All vets agree that, although the ceremonies did not take place outside, they still felt just as proud and just as honored.

Robert Jacobson/U.S. Navy Veteran: "It's nice when you do it outside, but then sometimes you cant."

Conrad Newgren/WWII Veteran: "It doesn't matter if it is inside or outside, it is all the same, rain or shine? Yea rain or shine. Celebrate the Vets, Yea."

U.S Navy Veteran Robert Jacobson and World War 2 Army Veteran Conrad Newgren have been coming to these events every year. They both say rain or shine Veterans will join together to honor one another, not only today, but everyday.

The only event cancelled were two fly overs after each ceremony.
