Can late child support affect an ND law license?

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawyers are raising questions about whether an attorney can have a law license suspended for being late on child support payments.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawyers are raising questions about whether an attorney can have a law license suspended for being late on child support payments.

Devils Lake attorney Rudolph Tollefson has had his license suspended twice briefly because of late payments.

The North Dakota Supreme Court recently gave Tollefson a six-month suspension from practicing law for other rule violations.

Tollefson's case prompted North Dakota's child support enforcement unit to put together a task force to look into the issue.

Some attorneys say an executive branch agency doesn't have authority to suspend a law license. They say that power belongs to the North Dakota Supreme Court.

Child support enforcement director Jim Fleming says it's rare for someone to get a professional license suspended because of late payments.
